Knowing how to wash clothes –
Without ruining them—is a basic life skill. Before loading the washing machine, you’ll need to do some preparation work such as separating items by color and texture, choosing the right wash cycle, and knowing how much detergent to add. All of this requires just a little practice, but you’ll understand it in no time.
Using a washing machine is a skill we’ve all probably mastered. It saves your time and energy. However, it is important to learn to use it properly for effective results. Because today, different washing machines offer different features to suit different clothing needs.
Check the wash care label on clothing to understand whether it can be washed at home or needs dry cleaning. If it says ‘dry clean only’, we suggest that you hand it over to dry cleaning services.
We have a few methods you can try to help you wash different clothes the right way.
Ingredients to keep handy
a) Detergent
b) Warm water
c) Bucket
Step 1: Pre Treat the Stain
Start by pre-treating your clothes. If there is a stain, remove it. To remove stains, put 2-3 drops of liquid detergent on the affected area. Rub it in using gentle motions of your fingers. Sprinkle some water and rub again. This will help you to clean as many stains as possible. This method of removing stains works on all types of fabrics.
Step 2: Soak the Garment
Once the stain is gone, prepare the clothing for washing. Take a bucket full of water. Add 1 tsp. liquid laundry detergent and drop your clothes in it. You can try Surf Excel Matic Liquid as it does not leave any residue as it being a liquid completely dissolves in water. Let it soak for 20 minutes. Gently squeeze your clothing to remove excess water. For soaking, you can use cold water for cotton and lukewarm water for other types of fabrics. The right water temperature can prevent shrinkage.
Step 3: Check the Care Label
This is a step that needs maximum attention. Check the wash care label to determine whether to hand wash or machine wash the garment. It will also help you figure out the right temperature to wash the clothes. Regardless of the type of fabric, we recommend that you always wash light and dark colored clothing in separate loads.
Step 4: Separate Your Garments
Before washing, always separate your clothes by their fabric type. Wash cotton, polyester, wool, chiffon, silk, etc., in separate loads to ensure that they are washed properly without damaging each other in the wash. Once you’ve separated your weights based on fabric type, do another round of separation based on color. Always wash dark and light colored clothing separately to prevent color change during washing.
Step 5: Right Way to Wash Cotton Garments
To wash your cotton, you can use a gentle wash cycle. We suggest that you use the cold water setting as hot water can cause cotton to shrink.
Step 6: Right Way to Wash Polyester, Woolen and Chiffon Garments
It is best to use warm water for polyester, wool and chiffon fabrics. You can use your regular wash setting for these garments. But for wool, we suggest you prefer hand washing unless your laundry machine has a ‘wool’ setting, as wool is a delicate material and requires careful handling. Always use a good quality detergent that is specifically designed for wool fabrics.
Step 7: Right Way to Wash Silk, Satin and Georgette Garments
Before washing delicate materials such as silk, satin or georgette, check the wash care label to find out if these can be washed at home. If so, wash using the temperature suggested on the care label. Some washing machines also provide a hand wash setting, check if your machine does. If yes, you can use that setting whenever you want to wash delicates. This will ensure gentle handling and maximum safety. Always use laundry detergent that is specially formulated for this.
Step 8: Use a Good Detergent and Right Amount of It
If you are looking for an effective detergent for your washing machine, then you can try Surf Excel Matic Liquid as it is specially formulated for washing machines and is easily available in the market. Sometimes wear and expensive fabrics require extra care and using mild detergents can work wonders.

Step 9: Dry
Dry your clothes properly after washing. Make sure your clothes are completely dry before storing them. This helps prevent the growth of mold in storage. This is helpful when you don’t plan on wearing a particular outfit any time soon. You can dry white clothes in broad daylight and colored clothes in partial shade. Remember to never dry silk clothes in the sun as it can damage the texture and color of the fabric. Wash Clothes | Wash Clothes(1) | Wash Clothes | Wash Clothes | Wash Clothes | Wash Clothes
